A Community Program Sponsored by First United Methodist Church

Most of us are aware of the incredible investment into Boca Helping Hands by the pastors, staff and members of First United Methodist Church. As a “team”, they volunteer one Saturday each month in the kitchen, many of their members are regular volunteers, and they adopted Coral Sunset Elementary School as part of our BHH Backpack Program.

Each year, in mid-September, the entire congregation participates in a Day of Service. Over the last two years, some 150-200 volunteers spent part of their weekend at BHH (and many other local charities) performing all types of jobs. The members also sponsored a food drive, which culminated in their celebration service on Sunday Night.

This year, Pastors Ken Roughton and Tom Tift and Director of Adult Ministries Mary Beth Tate are expanding the Day of Service with a clarion call to Feed My Community. Food drives are being coordinated all over the city over the next four to five weeks, involving businesses, churches, synagogues, and schools. I even saw a bin with a flyer at the YMCA this morning! When the drive ends on September 22nd, the total food collected will be divided up between Boca Helping Hands, C.R.O.S. Ministries, Ruth Rales Jewish Family Services Jacobson Food Pantry and the Palm Beach County Food Bank.

Feed My Community will kick off this Saturday (August 17th) with a special showing of “A Place at the Table” at the F.A.U. University Theater at 6:30 P.M. 

This powerful look at hunger in America has been shown in our area twice before to an overwhelming response. Admission is free…sort of! Actually, the price of admission is a canned good.
