Expanding Our Reach Into Boynton Beach

The pandemic has disproportionately affected communities already suffering due to systemic and racial inequity, such as residents of the Heart of Boynton neighborhood, the area of Boynton Beach roughly bounded by Boynton Beach Boulevard, Federal Highway, 13th Street and Interstate 95. Home to a largely Black and Haitian community, the area has long needed resources and investment. As COVID-related federal, state, and local financial support and protections end, the Heart of Boynton will begin to face the full brunt of the economic impact.

With our Boynton Beach food distribution location already in this neighborhood, Boca Helping Hands has now joined the Heart of Boynton Social Service Alliance - a group of agencies that will coordinate resources to provide a safety net for Heart of Boynton residents as they navigate the road to COVID-19 recovery. The brainchild of Sherry Johnson-Frew, Program Director at the Boynton Beach Faith Based Community Development Corporation, the Alliance will work to prevent evictions and foreclosures, provide emergency and flexible financial aid, identify resources for mental health education and family caregiving, and provide job training classes and assistance with job placement.

To start, BHH will provide job training resources to 30 area families initially targeted for assistance. BHH has already covered the cost of one person’s training to become an Emergency Medical Technician. “Building productive partnerships – like with the Boynton Alliance – is part of our strategy to maximize our impact in the communities we serve,” said BHH Executive Director Greg Hazle.
